Flakka, New Synthetic Drug on the Street

23. November 2015

Drugs of one form or another have always been around  since the dawn of man. Ever since humans first tried a mood or mind altering substance we have sought out new forms and branches of those substances. Wars were fought over opium, use of marijuana and halogenic dates back 1,000’s of years. Throughout the centuries, different cultures have had their favorite drugs. In the 1950’s America alcohol ruled the United States, the 1960’s brought marijuana and LSD. Come the late 1970’s and 1980’s cocaine was king, with cocaine came crack and the War on Drugs Started. The 1990’s brought ecstasy while the ever popular rave scene fueled its sales. In the 2000’s we saw a huge spike in painkiller and heroin addiction. In the 2010’s we have flakka, a new extremely dangerous street drug that is leaving a path of devastation in its path.

With the help of YouTube to document some of the more insane instances of flakka use, the new street drug flakka has become quite a sensation, both in cyberspace and reality. In the more insane cases, some users have stripped completely naked, broken into businesses, kicked in doors, rolled around screaming and various other scary reactions. In cases like this the police often get involved and the user is brought to a mental health center for medical supervision and an evaluation. In some instances, the users have gone into an extremely deep state of psychosis and were committed to mental health institutions and psychiatric wards.

What Exactly is Flakka?

Some experts refer to flakka as a designer drug, that puts it in the same category as molly and ecstasy. Flakka can be used in multiple ways; it can be injected, snorted, smoked and swallowed. Flakka is a chemical compound that carries with it a very foul smell. Flakka is commonly made from the chemical alpha-PVP, which is a synthetic version of the amphetamine-like stimulant cathinone. Many users will often mix it with other drugs, like marijuana, to add to the mind altering effect that it has. Flakka can have strong hallucinogenic properties that have linked it to various strange incidents in Southern Florida. Flakka is believed to have gotten its start in Southern Florida. There have been dozens of reported cases of abuse and varying levels of insanity caused by this dangerous drug.

Flakka has been referred to bath salts and crystal meth combined. The high that flakka produces is much more extreme than marijuana and much cheaper than cocaine, which is why it is appealing to some users. Flakka is an upper, it causes increased heart rate and blood flow, which explains why so many users report the want to move around during their high. A lower dose of flakka will cause a feeling of euphoria and minor hallucinogenic traits. The real danger comes when the dose increases. A high dose of flakka can cause twitching, seizures, muscle spasms, uncontrollable hallucinations, muscle jerks, delusions and fever. Things can go from bad to worse very fast, in more severe instances users have had kidney failure, heart failure, heart attacks, and body temperatures above 103 degrees. Many experts link the dramatic increase in body temperature to some of the most extreme behaviors, with a high fever comes other health risks. A fever of 103-106 degrees can cause a variety of different issues and health risks. Hallucinations, confusion, irritability, convulsions and dehydration are all possibilities with a fever of that temperature. .

What Type of Damage Does Flakka Do to the Brain?

All drugs are dangerous, almost all drugs have the potential to be fatal. When a user is under the influence of flakka and has a high fever death is a grim possibility, brain failure can occur when the body reaches extreme temperatures. Beyond the risk of causing a high fever, flakka has been linked to other issues. As mentioned above, flakka is an upper or a stimulant similar to cocaine. NIH says “As the name suggests, stimulants increase alertness, attention, and energy, as well as elevate blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration.” The effects of cocaine are much more easily understood than flakka, cocaine is purer (comes from parts of nature) than flakka, flakka is a completely man made the substance. Flakka is technically part of the “bath salt” family, they are homemade drugs created with a mixture of various chemicals. Makers of flakka often use a variety of different chemicals that all will cause a different effect on the brain when consumed separately. When consumed together the exact  effect is random and unpredictable. Users never really know what they are putting into their bodies, which increases the risk of an accidental overdose drastically.
